Understanding Sounds Coming From The Pipes In Your Home

Posted on

You may wonder if the sounds coming from your pipes every time you turn on the water is dangerous. It's possible that the noise stems from the movement of air within the plumbing pipes, which can include burping and hissing within the plumbing pipes. Typically, the noise stems from a pressure imbalance that prohibits the direct flow of water that is designed to push air through the vacuum suction system within the pipes. Plumbing vents are designed to prevent the air build up, which causes the noise. However, if they aren't fitted properly or start to cause noise they may need to be fixed.

Drains And Vents

The plumbing pipes within your home are connected using a network of vacuum suctions, drainage systems and vent lines, which allows water to come into and leave through clean and waste water systems. The vent pipes are located on the roof of most homes and work to dissipate sewer gases from the home. It also provides a way for air to flow through the plumbing pipes. When you flush the toilet or let the water out of your tub this releases extreme amounts of water that has to flow through the drainage system and vents causing strange noise.

When vents and drains aren't working properly the trapped air starts to gurgle as the water tries to exit through the pipes. This can also occur if the vent is wet or if something is lodged within the drainpipe. Typically, the main vent pipes become clogged due to snow, leaves or other debris becoming trapped in the vacuum system located on the roof.

Burping And Hissing

If there is air located in from the water trying to flow through the pipes this can create burping and hissing sounds. For instance, when the sink and the piping that connects to the main flow of water through the home vent isn't working properly air bubbles can form. The air bubbles become trapped in the sink's P-trap line and eventually the water forces its way through, which can cause the pipes to burp and hiss throughout the continuous flow of water.

When you experience strange sounds from your pipes, it may be best to contact a contractor to have the vents and drainage system cleaned. Typically, this is done by having the contractor spray water into the main vent pipe located on the roof to clear out any blockages.
